Getting to Know More About What DOHC 16v Is
In the automotive world that is already sophisticated, various technical terms often appear, especially those related to engines. One of the terms that is often found today is DOHC 16v. Maybe for some people, this term sounds foreign, but DOHC 16v is one of the important components that affect vehicle performance, especially in terms of fuel efficiency, engine power, and vehicle responsiveness.

What is DOHC 16v?
DOHC 16v itself is an abbreviation of Double Overhead Camshaft 16 Valves, which describes the configuration of the valve and camshaft system in a vehicle engine. To understand it better, let's break down each component :

DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft)
  • DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) refers to an engine design that uses two camshafts located above the cylinder head (overhead) to regulate the opening and closing of the valves. This system is more efficient than the single camshaft system (SOHC), which only uses one camshaft to regulate all valves properly.
16v (16 Valves)
  • The number 16 indicates the number of valves in the engine. Each cylinder in a DOHC 16v engine is equipped with 4 valves, namely two valves for intake (entry of the air and fuel mixture) and two valves for exhaust (exit of combustion waste gas). The total number of valves in a 4-cylinder car engine is 16 (4 valves x 4 cylinders).
DOHC 16v is an engine system that has two camshafts on top of the cylinder head and 16 valves that regulate the flow of air and fuel into and out of the car's cylinders.

How Does DOHC 16v Work?
To understand how DOHC 16v works, we need to know the functions of the components involved :
  • Camshaft (Noken As): The camshaft functions to move the valves. Each camshaft has a profile that determines the timing and duration of the valve opening and closing. In the DOHC system, there are 2 camshafts, 1 intake valve and 1 exhaust valve.
  • Valve: The valve functions to regulate the flow of air and fuel entering the cylinder and releasing exhaust gases. In the DOHC 16v engine, there are two intake valves and two exhaust valves per cylinder, allowing for more efficient air flow and better combustion.
  • Timing: In the DOHC 16v, the camshaft controls the timing of the valve opening and closing with high precision. This allows the engine to regulate the air-fuel mixture entering the cylinder and the exhaust gases exiting efficiently, resulting in optimal combustion and greater power.
  • Compression and Expansion: The DOHC 16v engine is capable of producing efficient combustion and higher compression, because more valves allow more air and fuel to enter, and waste gases to exit faster. Thus, the engine can produce more power per engine revolution.

Advantages of the DOHC 16v System
The DOHC 16v system itself has many advantages that make it the main choice in modern vehicle engines. Here are also some of its advantages :

Better Engine Performance
  • With two camshafts that control the intake and exhaust valves separately, the DOHC 16v allows more precise control over air and fuel flow. This makes combustion more efficient, producing greater power and responsiveness. The DOHC 16v engine also has the ability to rotate at high rpm, which will make it suitable for sports cars and vehicles with high performance needs.
Higher Fuel Efficiency
  • With much more optimal combustion, the DOHC 16v engine will tend to be much more efficient in using fuel. Proper valve opening and good airflow regulation allow the engine to work efficiently, reduce fuel waste, and produce lots of power with lower fuel consumption.
Lower Emissions
  • Because the DOHC 16v controls the flow of air and fuel well, the combustion that occurs in the engine is more perfect. This contributes to reduced exhaust emissions, which helps meet increasingly stringent vehicle emission standards in many countries.
Higher Engine Responsiveness
  • With many valves per cylinder, the DOHC 16v engine can produce greater airflow, which contributes to faster acceleration and good engine response. This makes the vehicle feel more agile and ready to accelerate when needed.
Higher Engine RPM Capability
  • This DOHC 16v engine can also rev higher than engines with a SOHC (Single Overhead Camshaft) system. This is thanks to better timing and airflow, which will allow the engine to work more optimally at high engine speeds.
